Alan Caiger-Smith (1930 – 2020)
Alan Caiger-Smith was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1930. He studied fine art at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and read History at King’s College, Cambridge, from 1949 to 1952.
In 1954 he began training in pottery under Dora Billington at the Central School of Art & Design and the following year he established the Aldermaston Pottery in Berkshire. In 1973 he published ‘Tin-Glaze Pottery in Europe and the Islamic World’, and in 1985 ‘Lustre Pottery: Technique, Tradition and Innovation in Islam and the Western World’,
In addition to his fame as a potter Caiger-Smith has continued to paint throughout his life.
Alan Caiger-Smith passed away on 21 February, 2020.
