Anthony Butler (1927-2010)
Born in Liverpool, Butler trained at Liverpool School (1944-1945), re-enrolling after completing his service in the RAF (1948-1950). A respected teacher as well as a painter he taught at St Helens Art School and went on to be head of art at Birkenhead School until he retired in the late 1980’s. During his career he exhibited at the Royal Academy and at Agnew’s in London and the Crane Gallery, the City Art Gallery and with the Northern Young Contemporaries at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester. Butler was a leading member of the Wirral Society of Arts, the Deeside Art Group and a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. His output was not large but of high quality and his paintings are now in the permanent collections of several important public galleries including the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead, Liverpool University and Manchester City Art Gallery. He lived at West Kirby on the Wirral.
